In 2013, Arkansas Photographer Carrie Crocker was kidnapped, almost murdered, and raped by third-level sex offender William Burke Martin. This is her story in visual form. The vigilante assaulted her with his fists and a knife. He forced her to clean herself after the event, to prevent prosecution.
Sexual Assault is a horrendous experience for any person of sex, race, or age. Due to taboos in American society, prosecution rates for rape are significantly lower than for other crimes.
William Burke Martin absconded on his parole and moved to Mississippi, where he attempted to rape another underage girl. He was prosecuted for that rape and later died in 2023. William Burke Martin was a stranger.
Carrie has been raped 16 times in Arkansas and in her lifetime. The last one dates January 2025. Rape culture is alive and well in the South.
